As the pressure to reduce costs and increase profits continues this will only get worse unless we decide that enough is enough.

We can be the change we want to see by changing our habits. Buying from companies using organic materials, have a manufacturing process that uses renewable green energy and who commit to ethical labour laws and a living wage.

Sustainable Organic Cotton

Growing cotton uses nearly 16% of the world’s pesticides. Each kilogram yield uses 20,000 litres of water and farming conditions can be hazardous. Switching to organic cotton, which is made from GMO-free plants, means replacing the synthetic pesticides and fertilisers with natural ones. And less nasty chemicals in the environment and less exposure for the farmers.

Choosing to wear organic materials can not only mean a higher quality product that is softer and kinder to skin. It is also better for the environment and for the people that make them. In fact, cotton growers can not only expect to offer a cleaner and healthier commodity. They can also demand a higher price by making the transition to organic farming. This will enable them to pay their employees a proper living wage and provide safe working conditions. They can also free themselves of many stress illnesses related to large, un-payable debts.

The most popular fabric currently used in the fashion industry is Polyester. When washed in the washing machine, the garments shed plastic microfibres which easily pass through the whole waste and water treatment system, into our waterways and into the ocean. These increasing plastics levels in our eco system do not biodegrade and eventually return into our food chain via the fish we eat.

Textile Waste

Another consequence of our modern, disposable lifestyles is the constant need for change or having the latest item. The fashion industry is no different, with retailers constantly bringing out new lines of clothes as the old ones go “out of fashion”, creating textile waste. In the past we may have worn something until it wore out or tried to fix things ourselves. These repair skills are on the wan; why bother when it’s quicker, easier and more convenient to buy something new. Out with the old and in with the new.

Looking beyond this textile waste. Some brands now offer a circular economy. These are schemes that encourage you to return your old clothes for credit so that they can reuse, recycle or remanufacture the material. Minimising the negative impacts on the environment to provide positive shift in the way we think about what we wear and how we use it once it’s no longer needed.

Sustainable Clothing the Way Forward

There are so many different aspects to why we should wear sustainable clothing. This is just a quick overview of some the changes that are happening in the fashion world. More needs to be done to make people aware of the choices they make. How it affects the world we live in and the positive outcomes made by changing our buying habits.

Our clothing begins life in the cotton fields of northern India, where the monsoons fill the reservoirs.
