These reservoirs supply nearly all the water needed to grow the organic cotton… which is very fond of a good drink. Co-planting and insect traps are used instead of more toxic pesticides and fertilisers (which also means a saving in water usage and less carbon). Along with the natural fertiliser – cow dung. It encourages biodiversity and gives our products an ultra soft feel. The picked cotton is often delivered to the ginning plant by camel.

The price the farmers get for the organic cotton is guaranteed by the government with the ginners offering higher prices for quality batches. At the ginnery, the cotton is separated into fibres and the seeds that remain are pressed to form feed for the cows and the oil is used in food products.

The factory where the garments are made has an integrated system for spinning, dyeing, weaving, cutting and sewing, removing the need for multiple suppliers and extra travel. The factory is SA8000 and GOTS certified which is strictly audited for social and sustainability standards and is entirely powered by green energy. The water used in the factory is recirculated in a closed loop system where the waste water is filtered, purified and reused in the next batch of clothing.

All the products produced in the wind powered factory in India are then shipped to the UK by sea freight, which produces significantly lower emissions then air freight and takes about 10 weeks.

The organic t-shirts arrive blank to a factory on the Isle of Wight and, as with the factory in India, is powered with renewable energy. The t-shirts that are bought from Firepower Clothing are printed on-demand so no unnecessary stock is created. Low waste printing technology is used that reduces wastage, cuts costs, improves print quality and increases productivity, the inks used are animal friendly. Cost savings throughout the supply chain allow more investment into greater working conditions for employees and social enterprise.

Beyond the Factories

Less than 1% of clothing is recycled and the remaining clothing ends up in landfill. So making quality products that last is very important. But that only slows down the impact. What happens once the garment is no longer need or wanted? Our clothing is produced by Rapanui, who are changing the standards within the fashion industry and encouraging a circular economy. If you look on the label of your organic t-shirt purchased from us you will see a web address (backtorapanui.com) that allows you to return you item in exchange for credit. Rapanui hope to created new products once they have been returned. So the need for waste is gone.

Why should we change to buy more sustainable clothing?Fashion is one of the worlds most environmentally damaging and exploitative industries.
